Orthokeratology in Alhambra, CA
Correct your vision while you sleep.
Wouldn’t it be great to fix your nearsightedness while you sleep? There is a proven solution called Orthokeratology or Ortho-k that improves symptoms of myopia and eliminates the need for daytime corrective lenses. Dr. Shiau is specially trained in this technique and can help you decide if Ortho-k is right for your eyes.
What is Orthokeratology?
Orthokeratology is used to improve mild to moderate myopia. Ortho-k can also help slow the progression of myopia in teens and young adults. It is an alternative for people who don’t want or aren’t the right candidate for LASIK surgery. And it’s for people who want to be free of daytime corrective lenses because of their busy, active lifestyle.
Ortho-k is a treatment that takes place at night. It uses a kind of contact lens that gently reshapes the eye while you sleep. Only trained eye doctors like Dr. Shiau can prescribe and properly fit Ortho-k lenses.
Is Ortho-k Right For You?
It may be. The first step is to set up an appointment with Dr. Shiau who has been treating patients with Ortho-k for years. He can test your vision and determine if this is a good fit for your vision and your lifestyle.
People who find daytime contact lens wear a hassle due to work conditions or lifestyle are good candidates. It may also be right for children who are too young for corrective surgery. And it may be a good choice to help slow the progression of myopia in younger eyes.
How Does Orthokeratology Work?
Orthokeratology works because eye tissue is both strong and flexible. A series of special “retainer” lenses progressively mold the shape of the eye for better focus. Dr. Shiau uses advanced eye mapping techniques to custom fit retainer lenses specifically for your eyes. The lenses work overnight and take a few days or weeks to fully improve vision.
During that time, most wearers will need temporary daytime lens prescriptions as their vision changes. And they will need a maintenance plan to preserve the corrected vision.
Generally, the process includes the following steps:
- A comprehensive eye exam with Dr. Shiau to determine health of the eye and cornea
- A topographical mapping of your eye
- The creation of “retainer lenses” to help mold the eye and improve focus
- Adjustment to daytime prescription during the treatment phase
- Next-day check up to assess the shape of the cornea and possibly adjust the lens
- Wearing retainer lenses at night on a scheduled basis to maintain the cornea shape
- Routine hygiene and care for your lenses until replacements are needed
Is Orthokeratology Safe?
Ortho-k is considered very safe. The lenses are gas-permeable which allows oxygen to reach eye tissue. It is a reversible, non-surgical treatment so there is no recovery time and none of the risks associated with more invasive procedures.
As with any contact use, there is some risk of minor infection. Dr. Shiau can guide you on ways to minimize risk including careful hygiene and care.
